Mr. Martin Henson, a representative from Boston’s chapter of Black Lives Matter, gave a moving and thought-provoking speech at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Nashua on May 7, 2017.  Members of the public and neighboring organizations joined our congregation for this important discussion.

Martin presented an overview of current events and activities, discussed the need for a Black Lives Matter movement in the context of white supremacy, and took questions from the audience. He began by telling us he loves his melanin, and ended with his challenge to all of us: “I’m gonna change the world, I don’t know about you.”

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement was founded in 2012 after George Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida. Black Lives Matter defines itself as “an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise.  It is an affirmation of Black folks’ contributions to this society, our humanity, and our resilience in the face of deadly oppression.”  The organization is dedicated to activism in a number of areas, including diversity, globalism, restorative justice, women’s rights, empathy, and loving engagement across generations and identities.
