For the month of May 2024 the Outreach Offering recipient will be The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

From their website:

“The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death.

AFSP is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide, including those who have experienced a loss.  AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health by engaging in the following core strategies:

• Funding scientific research
• Educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention
• Advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention
• Supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide

The UU Church of Nashua has community outreach at the center of our core values. We strive to have an active presence in the community and look for areas where we can lend a hand and make a difference. Our goal is not just to provide financial assistance, but also to encourage congregational participation, and to raise awareness among members of the associated social and economic issues.

Since 2003, we have donated our entire collection plate to organizations doing important work in our community. The Community Outreach Team is a sub-team of the Social Justice Team. It helps coordinate many of the outreach programs and gives support to other outreach initiatives taking place in our church. Our Outreach Team organizes the yearly calendar, receives and reviews requests, selects the monthly recipient and arranges for speakers at Sunday Services. To date we have raised and given away over $400,000 for dozens of different community organizations.
