100 Blessings

It is that time of year in church life when we are engaged in the task of both looking back at the year that has just gone by (writing Annual Reports, evaluations, etc.) and looking ahead to the year to come (filling in dates on the calendar and plans for programs and worship). It is a time of both reflection and anticipation. And above all else it is a time of busyness!

In the midst of all that busyness, it can be hard to remember to look for the ordinary blessings – even when we talk about blessings at church every Sunday! Sarah Widhu has made a beautiful bulletin board in the White Wing hallway that challenges us to find a hundred blessings every day. It comes from a Jewish idea:

“Jewish tradition gives us a goal: We should say one hundred blessings each day. When we try it, we discover that it’s quite difficult to find one hundred things each day for which to be thankful. So difficult, in fact, that we spend most of our time looking.” (Dannel I. Schwartz and Mark Hass)

In the midst of this busy season, what would it be like for you, for each of us, to try to look for one hundred blessings each day? How might that change the way we move through the world and through our lives.

If you want to try it out for a day or more, post one or two of the blessings you notice on our bulletin board. It will help all of us remember what’s worth pausing for as we sprint towards the end of the year.

Blessings,

Allison
